Garden Blue House

Garden Blue House

Garden design and maintenance, IJburg (NL)
Rudy Luijters, 2005–2009
Commissioner: Jeanne van Heeswijk & Hervé Paparponaris

The Blue House is a project by Jeanne van Heeswijk & Hervé Paparponaris. It is an art project in which artists, writers and architects are invited to be residents of IJburg. IJburg is an entirely new part of Amsterdam – also literally, being built on artificial islands. In the project, the artists become part of this new community, influencing and questioning developments at IJburg with their work. Rudy Luijters –  invited as one of the residents –  was asked to design the garden, for which he chose all edible plants like fruits, flowers, leaves or roots. The inhabitants of the surrounded house block can ‘share the harvest’ and the children see blackberries and raspberries growing for the first time; more than that, the garden acts as a catalyst for social activity.
