48 Plants

Art project for the Botanical garden Kaliningrad (RU)
Atelier Veldwerk (Onno Dirker, Rudy Luijters), 2014

48 Plants. Course of Spring emerged in connection with an international program of phenological research The Motion of Spring 2012–2014: Evidences of Climate Change Over 120 Years’ organised on the territory of the Kaliningrad region by the students of the legendary teacher of the Kaliningrad dendrology studies Galina Kucheneva. The art project 48 Plants. Course of Spring was implemented by the Baltic Branch of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts and Atelier Veldwerk (The Hague) in the official framework of the Netherlands-Russia year 2013.

Atelier Veldwerk discovered qualities in both urban space, the complex history of Kaliningrad and the remarkable way in which the inhabitants of this city deal with public space, gardens and plants. The artists, looking for relevant information, were surprised to find so little literature about this topic in general, and on the botanical gardens in particular. That made them decide to make a ‘short guide’ to the Kantiana Botanical Garden.
